INSTRUCTIONS
- Hello – welcome!
- Setting up your Thermostat and creating a Selfhood Statement is the first step toward becoming your own Oracle.
- The Thermostat is designed to capture your values in action. No more static aspirational words. It is time to bring your values to life.
- Your Thermostat will evolve over time as you get to know yourself better. Do not worry about making it perfect during this first pass. Just fill it out with your best guess and gut instinct.
- Some parts of the Thermostat might seem geared towards work, but they are not. Work is just the context society mostly presents them in. You are whole being and the Thermostat is for your whole self. Please keep that in mind.
- Now, open the Thermostat in your Notion dashboard. You can find it on the page named Reflections in the top navigation.
- As you can see the thermostat is made up of 8 parts: Approach, Identity, Flair, Arena, View, Metric, Ambition and Risk Tolerance.
- Together they form the core of your Selfhood Statement. But we are getting ahead of ourselves now. Writing the Statement is the very last step.
- Now, let’s figure out who you are and what you value when no one is watching you.
- First we have Approach. In all essence this is your driver, what propels you to take action. In my case, as you can see it is curiosity. This not a recent trait for me or something I have become. It has been present all my life and it is something I love about myself.
- What is your Approach? Why do you do what you do? What pulls you forward in life?
- Click on where it says Curious below Approach and add your own word by typing it in and then clicking on it next to where it says Create.
- Now let’s take a look at Identity. Also, if I’m going too fast – pause me, I’ll be right here when you are ready to move on.
- So, Identity. This is all about who you are. Not your titles or the roles you take on in life. This is who you have always been.
- In my case, I’m a Creative at heart. What identity have you always had from a young child all the way to now?
- If you need some examples click on where it says creative and you’ll see a list with more identities.
- I suggest that you step away from your professional context and go with your first instinct.
- Who are you at heart?
- Add your answer to the dropdown.
- Next we have Flair. This is how you do what you do. How you are perceived by yourself and by others.
- What is an innate quality that you value about yourself and how you do things?
- Fill out your answer and add it below Flair.
- Now we are at Arena. This is where you do what you do. Where do you engage life? What is your home turf?
- The pre-filled options are public, private and communal. Feel free to add whatever Arena that resonates with you whether that be cosmic or a nook under the stairs.
- Let’s look at View now. This is all about when. What is your internal, natural timeline?
- A simple way to discover this is to consider the timeline the goals you are actively working towards fall on.
- I have chosen the long view for myself, but my sense of long view might be your short view and vice versa. You don’t have to take me or anyone else into account. This is only about how you perceive time.
- The options I have given you are long and short, but feel free to add what resonates the most with you. Go ahead.
- Now, let’s move on to Metric. This relates to the expression of what you do.
- I have given you depth, quality and quantity to work with. In my case I care about the polish and finish of things. I’m not too concerned with the amount of something, so I choose quality.
- Add what feels intuitively right to you. You can do it.
- Ok, we are in the home stretch now!
- Ambition – again let’s not compare with other people. What is the ambition setting you default to when no one is watching or influencing you. Do you feel ambitious?
- You are not rating yourself on how you are performing ambition. This once again about who you are. The question is – to what extent does ambition propel you?
- I’ve given you options that exclude a middle ground to push you to make a choice. But you are free to add your own word here.
- Finally, let’s look at your Risk Tolerance. Once again, this is not meant to be an aspirational setting. What is and has almost always been true to you? Does risk propel you or is it a pitfall?
- You’ll see that there are no middle ground options here either. Feel free to add a word that feels more true to you. Go on.
- There you have it! Your Thermostat is filled out. I’m so proud of you.
- Now replace the words in the Selfhood Statement above with the words you choose for each part of your Thermostat. Pause me while you do this.
- And there you go! This is you.
- Your Thermostat will appear on many of the Review pages going forward and you’ll be asked to keep it as reference point as you navigate through life.
- I would suggest you keep from editing it too often. This is not meant to be a measure of how you feel about yourself today or even this month. This is you over time – over a lifetime.
- You’ll be prompted to review and make minor adjustments to your Thermostat on an annual basis.
- So – hello! My name is Janet and I am a curious creative with a confident flair in the public arena. I focus on the long view and measure by quality. My ambition is high and my risk tolerance is low.
- Who are you?
